The goal of this project was to fit a Mikuni SBN44/46 carb on your JS440/JS550/550SX* ski, while creating the smallest volume intake possible. The small volume provides easier starting and idling in the water, while this designs shape still retaining very high flow for high RPM performance. The smaller Runners also increase the charge velocity, helping fill the cases with more air and fuel mixture. The SBN44 Carb was originally designed for Reed Valve engines larger than 550cc's. Larger Reed Valve engines generate a strong carburetor vacuum signal. The SBN44's large volume under the throttle plate, combined with the already rather large volume Piston Port 90 degree intake, is a terrible combo on our smaller engines because of this massive volume. Larger intake volume equates to less vacuum signal to the carb, and this Vacuum signal is the language the carb reads to know how much fuel the engine is asking for. Low Signal intakes on Piston Port 2 strokes are hard to start, hard to jet under half throttle, and create sluggish power at low rpm's. Our Low Volume intake manifold provides better in the water starting and idling, more power off idle, and makes low rpm jetting much more easy to dial in. Suggested Jetting for Kawasaki Piston Port 550 motors, with our intake, and the Mikuni SBN44 Carburetor. These pilot jet sizes might seem a little small, but the better signal lets the carb pull a little more fuel through the Pilot Jet. Naturally, engines vary so check your plug color for that nice medium Brown tint after some run time. If you are at other elevations, split the jet sizes up or down referencing the sea level and 5000' elevation data. All elevations and porting use the 2.0 Needle and seat, with the Black 80 Gram spring. All JS440 and JS550 models had the Piston Port engine stock. |
